The Informed Vegan: Idaho Wants Animal Cruelty to be a Felony.

theinformedvegan:

idaho animal cruelty laws

Forty-seven states currently allow animal abusers to be charged with a felony but Idaho is not one of them. Activists are pushing for a voter initiative that would allow animal abusers to be prosecuted at the felony level.

Idaho, North Dakota, and South Dakota are the only states left without felony animal cruelty laws. Currently, animal abuse in Idaho carries a misdemeanor charge with a $100 fine. If the initiative passes, the charge would be $400 for the first offense, $600 for the second, and $9,000, a felony, and a year in prison for the third. Reasonable punishments for unreasonable crimes.

The initiative has tons of support, even the Idaho newspaper The Statesman put out a great statement of support. The paper called Idaho’s current animal abuse laws an “embarrassment” and urged voters to support the initiative all the way.

Voters need to provide the petition group with 47,000 signatures this year in order to get the initiative on the ballot. If you are an Idaho voter, make sure you sign the petition when you see petitioners outside of grocery stores and libraries this next year. Then you can vote for the initiative when it comes up in the November 2012 election.

With such broad support for stronger animal cruelty laws, I feel like there is no way this thing won’t pass. Then we’ll have to work on the Dakotas.

Write to UNESCO: Bullfighting is not culture; it is cruelty

“Bullfighting is one of the most abhorrent forms of animal abuse for entertainment still in existence—the bloody spectacle is responsible for the deaths of up to 250,000 animals worldwide every year.

Right now, bullfighting supporters are starting the process to have this cruelty protected by having the ‘sport’ listed as a form of cultural heritage. Politicians in both France and Tordesillas in Spain have voted on this recently.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) preserves many expressions of genuine Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Please let UNESCO know that you would never support a move to accept bullfighting, or any other act of animal cruelty, as a practice worthy of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Any successful listing of this despicable activity by UNESCO would not only give a veneer of respectability to the torture of animals for public entertainment, but it would also mean that subsidies may be made available to financially safeguard the future of bullfighting.

Please speak out for bulls todaysign on to our letter to UNESCO now.”

Petition: Animal Cruelty Goes Mobile

v3getarian:

Tell Google they should not promote animal cruelty!

In this day of technology, you can find mobile applications (“apps”) for just about anything, from getting weather forecasts to finding shopping bargains. Now, thanks to a new app by Kage Games, you can virtually participate in the sadistic “bloodsport” of dogfighting. The KG Dogfighting app, which sells on Google’s Android Market website, entices gamers to “Feed, water, train and FIGHT your virtual dog against other players….” The logo is a pit bull’s bloody face.

“The game teaches users how to breed, train, fight, medicate and kill virtual dogs,” said Paul M. Weber, President of the Los Angeles Police Protective League. According to a news article, the game “allows players to train a virtual pit bull to fight other virtual dogs and build street cred that ‘puts money in your pocket and lets you earn more in fights.‘“Players have a “gun for police raids and can inject the dog with steroids.”

Dogfighting is a violent crime that is a felony in all 50 states, and it is a federal crime if it involves interstate or foreign commerce. Dogfighting victims suffer cruel training methods and often die in fights. Those dogs not killed during fights may be viciously killed by their handlers when they do not win. Family pets are sometimes stolen to be used as “bait” animals. This is not a game – it is animal cruelty.

Take Action!

ANIMAL CRUELTY FAILS.: Urge PETCO to Ditch Rabbit Fur Toys!

animalcrueltyfails:

PETCO has been under fire for years for animal neglect and mistreatment, overcharging customers, and purchasing animals from massive, abusive mills. In 2008, after pressure from PETA, the House Rabbit Society, and other animal protection groups, PETCO announced that it would phase out the sale of rabbits in its stores and work with adoption groups to place homeless rabbits as part of the company’s “commitment to saving more animal lives.” But despite knowing about the horrific suffering that goes into every fur-trimmed toy, the company refuses to stop carrying toys made from the fur of dead rabbits.

Animals on fur farms spend their entire lives confined to cramped, filthy wire cages that are so small the animals can barely take more than a few steps in any direction. Wire cages cut into rabbits’ delicate foot pads, and the animals are denied the opportunity to engage in natural behavior such as running and burrowing. Fur farmers use the cheapest killing methods available, including neck-breaking, suffocation, poisoning, and genital electrocution. Crude killing methods aren’t always effective, and sometimes animals “wake up” while they are being skinned.

The best way to help animals who are abused for their fur is never to buy fur or support companies that sell real fur.

Please use the form below to urge PETCO’s CEO to dump fur for good. Let him know that you will not shop at PETCO until all real fur is off the shelves.

Fuck PETCO.

Tell the NIH: Make a Plan to End Animal Experiments

TRIGGER WARNING - Monkey in cage through the link

“Almost twenty years ago, Congress demanded that the National Institutes of Health move toward non-animal methods of scientific research — yet still, little progress has been made.

Animals are sentient beings, just like you and me. They show emotions, feel pain and don’t deserve to be manipulated and abused in laboratory experiments. We have developed effective technology to replace animal-based experiments. And in cases where such technology isn’t yet available, we must work to develop it.

It’s time we start seriously exploring these more humane, and even more effective, testing methods. Tell the National Institutes of Health Director Francs Collins to make a plan with concrete actions to end the use of animals in scientific research.

Updated: Star succumbs to injuries - just a day after animal cruelty protest

“Star, the mixed-breed dog which was rescued near Ghar Hasan after having been shot, bound and buried alive, died this afternoon.

The sad news came less than 24 hours after hundreds of people took part in a demonstration against animal cruelty - the biggest protest of its kind ever held in Malta.

Star, whose plight shocked the nation, had been under care at St Francis animal welfare centre and had been thought to be making good progress.  She was operated upon soon after the rescue, and 40 gunshot pellets were removed from her head.

Star died at 3 p.m. [June 6] after having suffered an acute inflammation in her pancreas which developed in the past few days.

Just last Saturday the dog spent a few hours with her new would-be owners in order to get accustomed to them and her new surroundings. But she then started throwing up and was returned to the welfare centre.

The dog’s plight drew attention in many countries and many people had offered to house her.”

——

May who ever did this to her be found and prosecuted! I don’t understand how people can be so cruel to any living being. Star was a fighter, and even after 40 shots to the head, she kept fighting until her body couldn’t any longer.

RIP Star.

Top Ten Ways to Fight Circus Cruelty

  1. Don’t Go to the Circus!
…Unless it’s one that doesn’t feature animal performers—and there are lots of them! Read our list of cruelty-free circuses.

  2. Support Stronger Laws
Fight for state and federal laws that protect animals and raise the minimum allowable standards of care. Join the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade to be alerted when it’s time to take action on animal-related legislation.

  3. Attend a City Council Meeting
Counties, cities and even universities have succeeded in keeping cruel circuses out by banning wild and exotic animal performances. If you’re interested in passing a similar ordinance where you live, get involved in your local government.

  4. Alert the Media!
Contact your local newspapers and television stations when a circus comes to town, letting them know about the cruelty often inflicted on animals who are forced to entertain.

  5. Contact the Venue Hosting the Circus
Ask that the invitation be withdrawn and suggest an animal-free circus for the future.

  6. Ask Authorities to Inspect
When a circus comes to your area, make sure the correct permits have been obtained. Also, contact your local law enforcement agency or humane society and ask them to make sure the circus follows local and state laws regarding the humane treatment of animals.

  7. Report Abuse
If you see something, say something! Report any abuse relating to circus animals to the proper authorities—the U.S. Department of Agriculture and your local animal control agency.

  8. Set an Example for Others
Get the facts on circus cruelty on ASPCA.org and educate your friends, family and community about cruelty to circus animals.

  9. Ask Local School Boards to Ban Circus Promotions
Circuses often engage in promotions with schools to encourage class field trips. Be sure to speak out against this!

  10. Educate Your Children
Talk to your kids about why circuses are cruel and visit our children’s website, ASPCAKids, for circus information written especially for them.

Cops face animal cruelty charge

“Bloemfontein - The Virginia SPCA in the Free State has laid a charge of animal cruelty against Ventersburg police after they allegedly dragged two injured cows to their offices, Beeld reported on Tuesday.

SPCA committee member Thea Smith told Beeld the cows were injured in an accident at about 22:00 on Sunday, but the SPCA was only called in the next day.

The cows, which had broken legs, were allegedly dragged to the police office and left overnight.

Smith said people had told of how they heard the cows “cry” the entire night.

The animals were immediately put down by the SPCA, Beeld reported.

Smith said one of the high ranking officers was upset because he wanted to braai the animals.

Initially Smith said she received opposition when she arrived at the police station, but she insisted on laying a charge of animal cruelty.

“The animals must have gone through indescribable pain and suffering. Visible drag marks were seen on the animals,” Smith said.”
