The hunters become the hunted: Indian state sanctions shooting animal poachers
A western Indian state has declared war on animal poaching by sanctioning its forest guards to shoot hunters on sight in an effort to curb rampant attacks against tigers, elephants and other wildlife.
The government in Maharashtra says injuring or killing suspected poachers will no longer be considered a crime.
According to the Wildlife Protection Society of India, 14 tigers have been killed by poachers in India so far this year — one more than for all of 2011. The tiger is considered endangered, with its habitat range shrinking more than 50 per cent in the last quarter-century and its numbers declining rapidly from the 5,000-7,000 estimated in the 1990s, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Ok. For the uninformed: A bit is a piece of metal which goes into the horse’s mouth. Bits cause pain by cutting into the gums, tongue and bars (literally the horse’s skull bones on the bottom of the jaw, which are as sharp as a knife edge) to “control” horses, and are a torture device. Imagine having these pieces of work in your mouth!

If you thought the endangerment of a species was bad enough, or it's exploit for human entertainment, then this will shock you. Female orangutans in Indonesia are frequently captured and used in brothels as prostitutes, where they are tied down and repeatedly raped on a daily basis. Animal testing is simply ineffective in identifying whether a medication is effective or safe. This is more than opinion, it is backed up from studies comparing animal data with human experience
The reasons for this are:
- Many illnesses are undetectable in animals. For example, animals cannot explain that they’re feeling suicidal, suffering blurred vision, or aching joints. They may be incapable of developing the condition that a human suffers. For example, a drug which damages the spleen of a human will never do the same to the rat, which has no spleen.
- Often medications affect humans over years or even decades. Most lab animals will live a year at most. Attempts to overcome this by giving a higher dose over a shorter period are not effective.
- Perhaps the biggest obstacle is that animals react in a different ways to humans. It’s established from comparisons of human and animal data that animals are an ineffective way of predicting what a drug does to a human. An example of this was a study that looked at side effects that were detectable in animals. The undetectable ones (like hearing damage and depression) were ignored. Over half (54%) of the side effects were not detected by the animal tests. [Clin Pharmacol Ther 1962; pp665-672] This appalling statistic places animal testing alongside more obviously unscientific methods; flipping a coin would be 50% effective. Yet some defenders claim that identifying 46% of damaging side effects is useful information. Unfortunately it isn’t, as we see in our next statement.
- Animals identify so many false side effects which never result in humans. A study by animal experimenters showed that of the side effects highlighted in the animal lab, 75% are meaningless to humans. In other words, just because it happens to a rat, it doesn’t mean it’s likely to happen to a human.[ AP Fletcher in Proc R Soc med, 1978;71, 693-8]
